September 11th, C.A.S.T. for Kids Fishing Event

What an amazing time. Not sure who to thank first... Jim Owens, the kids.... volunteers. Just awesome!

I'd first like to give a round of applause to Todd and Harry for donating their time to get these kids on the water.

Every kid came back with huge smiles.

Gayle did an excellent job of running the shirt booth and promoting CAST, many passers had no knowledge of the organization and Gayle was able to give them all the information, hopefully we might see some of those folks at next year's event.

I would also like to give a big thanks to the members of the Western Bass Club, these guys and gals showed up in force.

August 22, CMA Members Tournament at Werwin Resevoir

Ok kids here is the lowdown from the Mayfield CMA Member tourney. Everyone made it to Mayfield Lake Park by 6 am. 5 boats 11 fisherpersons. Had 3 folks sign up as new members. So 7 actually signed up to become full fledged CMA members. Welcome aboard Bob and Connor N. and family and Steve B.

We blasted off about 6:15 fished until 11 am. First half of the day Todd R. hooked and his boat mate Ed "The Netman" netted  2 Tigers 1-36x14 and 1-34x15. Both on Musky Things. Many of the anglers saw many Tigers a bunch of follows and some hook ups were there to be had in the a.m part of the tourney. But only the 2 were netted. I think the bite was on during the lunch break. Perfect weather. Cloudy and just enough wind to break up the glassy surface.

Lotsa of great food and lotsa of laughs during the lunch break. Thanks to everyone who brought a dish.

Everyone got back on the water at 1 p.m. Thought for sure there'd be a bunch of fish caught. Again lots of fish seen. I think they (Tigers) ate while we were on shore stuffing our faces..lol The hot boat was Bob's. They had 4 fish on and landed 1 -32.5 inch Tiger. Bob N. got his 32" on a Musky Thing too. With an hour to go! In his "secret" hot spot. Congrats to Bob! So here are the "official" results:

1st place Todd Reis  34"x 15 & 36"x14. Which was also good for winning the Double Option prize that carried over from 2 prior Members tournies. Good for $120.

2nd place Bob Nocis  32 1/2 inch no girth.

The Triple Option kitty was not won so that pot will be given away at the October General Meeting which is now up to $105. (corrected from previous post)

Thanks to all that attended. It was a great time out there. Hope to see you all at a meeting or at our C.A.S.T. for kids event we are volunteering on September 11th. At Gene Coulon Park. We do need boats and on shore volunteers so get ahold of me or Gayle. This is an event that will change your life forever! Its Patriots Day so give a  little something of yourself to help another!

Thanks

August 11th, General Meeting with Bruce Bolding.

There is quite a bit of info to decipher. But i will say that they pike that are in the Pend O'Reille are there to stay. As you know they were not planted by the WDFW. Some how they got there. Its probable that they originally came from Eastern Montana..East of the Continental Divide where they are native and where brought over from what i remember back in 2004. Put into the Pend and a few other lakes in Idaho and have been showing up in a few other lakes on the eastside of the State of Washington. They are not wanted there. But they are in the Pend O' Reille and they are going to stay there. Their expanding numbers are amazing. The WDFW and the Kalispan Tribe are working together to try to figure out if there will be a size or bag limit on these pike.
Here are the survey numbers that were shown to us at our CMA Meeting...

2004
EF Electronic St 126
Gil Net 56
F.Net 64
N.Pike caught 26
2009
EF (Electronic) ST 62
Gill Net 33
FN Sets 15
274 Pike caught
2010
60 Gill Nets set over 25 miles of the river
755 Pike gil netted
So the pike population has been growing. There are thousands of pike in the river system. The fish taken are a very small number compared to the overall population. And it will help the biologists understand in the future where the species may be headed.

With the numbers that have been counted so far there probably will not be a limit set on the species. Like i said the WDFW doesn't want them in there but they will not remove them. It would be difficult to eradicate the species completely. So with that being said if fishermen are smart about this fishery and want it to become a trophy species only the fishermen can make that happen. By 1.) Taking the smaller fish.. say the 18-24 inch "Hammer Handle" sized pike for eating and 2.) releasing the bigger fish say 36"-40" breeder fish. Plus releasing those fish also will help control the smaller Pike. And that can help establish a better Pike fishery for those who are into it for the sport of it.

There was a pike caught in Newman Lake earlier in the year. That fish should have been kept. If there are Pike in Newman that would be a problem. If there is 1 there may now be more. I have fished Newman before and have noticed a big change in the fishery there. The forage for the Tigers is not what is was once before. In my opinion if the pike are there and eating those fish then its possible that the Tiger fishery may only be there for a short time. So know your fish..if you catch a Pike in Newman take it. And let some one at the WDFW know. I don't know if folks knew this or not but a few of the lakes were illegal bucket biologist planted. They include Hayden Lake and Coeur D'Alene in Idaho. In Washington State, Box Canyon Reservoir, Long Lake. They got into Long Lake through the Spokane river System and now possibly in Newman by some other bucket illegal dumping.

This is a brief overview of what we learned and what the WDFW and the KNDR know as of now. I would recommend asking smart questions of those folks. And it would be great if all of the fishermen keep in contact with the biologists. Give the KNDR good accurate numbers when they ask for creel counts. And the WDFW too. If folks really want to keep this fishery healthy, strong and fun for all then those who fish them try to be a positive contributor. Take only what you need and try to release the bigger fish. I am o.k with folks taking the fish just don't be gluttons. This can be a good fishery for food and great for fun. Some of the info is my opinion. Most of this info are the FACTS!! Given by Bruce Bolding, Warm Water Head Biologist of the WDFW.. And all around great guy!

June 26th & 27th

"The Mayfield Open" 5th Annual Musky Tournament

It was a great weekend with great weather. Full moon also.

We started the event off by giving away a $25 gift card to Wholesale Sports.
Only '1' musky registered. Caught by Ron/Roger Jutte.

1st place, big fish and first fish for Saturday earned them a nice check for the main event plus $100(Courtesy Fish Country Sports) for big fish and $50(Courtesy Auburn Sports & Marine) for the first musky for Sat.

Sunday's $50 Auburn Sports gift card was raffled off. So was 1st, 2nd and 3rd place money for the double and triple option pots.
Many people reported follows and even some aggressive ones but no takers for some reason. Even the Juttes had to resort to a small Rapala on a light tackle spinning rod and deadstick the lure to coax their healthy 44.5"er into biting. Way to go guys.

The water level had dropped about a foot by Sun so we knew the bite would be tough. A huge raffle following the awards resulted in everyone walking away with some very cool stuff. Check out the sponsors down the page further under "sponsors." Without these folks this would have just been an ordinary fishing trip.A big Thank You to our judge - Todd Reis. I had hoped to keep him much busier than just one fish but it wasn't for lack of trying on mine and my partners part.

Talk about great guys: Ron and Roger Jutte took the time to loan their extra trolling motor battery to another team that was dead in the water Sunday morning, all while on the water, allowing this team to finish the tourney. That's a perfect example of the caliber of people fishing Cascade Musky Association events. Thanx guys.

Another Thank You to the set-up crew: Ed Walzer, Todd Reis, Steve Jackson and Ellen McVey.And yet another Thank You to the clean-up crew: Todd and Gayle Reis, Steve Jackson, Lori Wells, Rich and Ellen McVey and Mario and Denise Osborne. I sure hope I didn't miss anybody. If I did, Thank You too.

To all of you that think you are not good enough to participate, you are wrong. This is a fun event shared by very great folks.

The date is already booked for next year so make your plans to attend. There is not another event in WA where you can have this much fun, learn new techniques, win great prizes all while having a good chance at winning a big check.
